Direct answer: Most walk-in tubs fit a standard 60-inch alcove, install in about a day once on site, and are quoted per home. Original Medicare generally does not pay, VA HISA grants can help eligible veterans, and you stay seated while the tub fills and drains. Each answer below links to a longer Houston guide.
We grouped answers into fit, installation, money and daily use. The full list below is also marked up so search engines and assistants can read it exactly as written.
Before you call
It helps to know the alcove width, which end the drain is on, and the size of your water heater. Our fit check shows how. If the bathroom is upstairs, mention that too.
Questions about safety
A walk-in tub reduces the need to step over a high tub wall and gives you a seat and grab bars, but it does not make falls impossible. Keep a nonslip mat outside the door, dry your feet before standing, and stand up slowly after a warm soak, since warm water can make some people lightheaded. The CDC and the National Institute on Aging both publish practical fall-prevention tips. If someone in the home has already fallen, ask their doctor about a fall risk check.
Questions about the quote
A written quote from us lists the tub, any options, removal, plumbing, electrical, wall finish and permits, so you can compare it fairly with any other offer. There is no obligation, and we do not use countdown deals or pressure.
All questions
Will a walk-in tub fit in my bathroom?
Often, yes. Many models are built for a standard 60-inch alcove. We also check doorways and the path through the house, because the tub arrives in one piece. See the fit check.
Can you install a walk-in tub on a slab foundation?
Yes. Most Houston homes are on slabs. Choosing a tub with the drain on the same end as the old tub avoids cutting concrete.
How long does installation take?
Many installs are finished in one day once the tub is on site. Drain moves, new circuits or hidden water damage can add time. Details are on our installation page.
Do I need a City of Houston permit?
It depends on the scope. Plumbing permits in Houston are bought by a registered master plumber, and moving drains, adding circuits or opening walls are common triggers. Suburbs and unincorporated areas have their own rules.
How much does a walk-in tub cost?
National guides report wide ranges, roughly $3,500 to $10,000 for most projects per Fixr, and $1,800 to more than $20,000 per This Old House. Your quote depends on the tub and the work your bathroom needs. See cost in Houston.
Does Medicare cover walk-in tubs?
Original Medicare generally does not. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer limited bathroom-safety benefits; ask your plan in writing.
Can veterans get help?
Eligible veterans may qualify for a VA HISA grant through the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. Approval should come before work begins. See paying for a walk-in tub.
Do I sit in the tub while it fills and drains?
Yes. The door must be closed before water goes in, so you sit while it fills and drains. Fast-fill faucets, quick drains and heated seats make this more comfortable.
Will my water heater be big enough?
Maybe. Deep walk-in tubs hold more than standard tubs. Send a photo of the heater label and we will tell you whether it is likely to keep up.
What happens during a power outage?
The door, seat and gravity drain still work. Jets, heaters and electric water heaters do not. See our storm planning guide.
How do I keep a walk-in tub clean in a humid climate?
Wipe the door gasket, leave the door ajar to dry, run the exhaust fan, and follow the maker's line-cleaning steps if you have jets.
Is a shower a better idea?
For wheelchair users, people who cannot lift a foot, or anyone who prefers showers, a roll-in or walk-in shower may fit better. Compare them on tub or shower.
Which brands do you carry?
Ella's Bubbles (Aging Safely Baths is a dealer), Hydro Dimensions, Bestbath including RANE by Bestbath, and Meditub.
Do you sell tubs without installation?
Yes. Supply-only tubs come with tech support for experienced DIYers and contractors, though we recommend full installation for most families.
Which Houston-area communities do you serve?
Houston and Harris County plus nearby communities such as Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, Pearland, League City, Cypress, Spring, Kingwood, Pasadena and Conroe. See the service map.
